Frequently Asked Questions & Support

The natural frequency is a global measure of stiffness for the total structure so if you have a hidden weakness, you will see it as a drop in the natural frequency.

Natural frequency is the key to unlocking all the information about your structure. Once you have them, you will be able to know the loads and the stresses everywhere in your structure.

Yes, the Auto-OMA is robust and efficient. Its theoretical principles are explained in this paper, please see Brincker, Amador and Lydakis: A new Cloud-based software for automated SHM of civil structures. In Conf. Proc. of IMAC 2023.

The robustness of Auto-OMA is essential because you cannot afford to lose data from important and extraordinary events. That is why you need super powerful and robust algorithms that will always work in your favor.

In Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), natural frequencies and damping ratios are important parameters for assessing the integrity and behavior of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other civil engineering infrastructures.

For a structure, the natural frequencies are the rates at which the structure tends to oscillate when disturbed from its position of equilibrium. These frequencies are inherent properties determined by the structure’s geometry, material properties, mass distribution, and boundary conditions.

The damping ratio tells us how good the structure is at calming down these vibrations. It is a number that does not have any units (like meters or seconds), and it compares the actual amount of calming force in the structure to the ideal amount needed to stop the vibrations as quickly as possible without any back-and-forth movement.

In SHM, we keep an eye on damping ratios because if they change, it might be a clue that something about the structure has changed, like a possible damage or wear. So, by tracking how this number goes up or down over time, engineers can get early warnings about parts of the structure that might need a closer look or repair.

Because it is better to have all the information than just a small part of it – and it does not cost you more when using auto OMA.

You should do that, but you cannot see a hidden weakness and it is expensive to inspect. On the contrary, acquiring data and analyzing it is cheap.

We encourage you to try some of our software tools to see how the features work. You make your own solution, we help you to do as you want it to work

OMA is not an easy task. It takes a long time to learn, and even after mastering it, it requires lots of time and effort to analyze all data sets manually. That is why you need an auto OMA solution – of your own.

Integrating automated Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) into Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) enhances infrastructure safety by enabling continuous, non-intrusive monitoring. This approach detects changes in a structure’s vibrations to identify potential damage early. Automated OMA allows for real-time analysis, improving the efficiency and accuracy of SHM systems. By providing detailed insights into structural health, it supports proactive maintenance, extends infrastructure lifespan, and ensures safety with minimal human intervention.
